Best beginners rc helicopter?

My birthday is coming up soon can’t wait 28

My girlfriend is going to get me a radio controlled helicopter

I like the e-sky commanche but have heard it is not very good outside

it is really a good beginners outdoors rc helicopter I am interested in as space indoors is limited here.

I am looking for suggestions on reasonably affordable beginners outdoor rc helicopters.

Something that I won’t lose interest in as soon as I learn to fly it as Xmas is still gonna be 4 months after my birthday and would not like to get something that would kill the hobby for me before then.

So please really good suggestions on beginners helicopters that would allow me to learn but not lose interest.
Remember outdoor please

I’m not some 5 year old getting a present.

Hi The Honey Bee is a superb starting helicopter. Check the website for places to buy these helicopters from. Just type in rc helicopters in Google and you will get a massive list of places where you can buy them from. I’m also new to the hobby i’m 34! And I’ve just joined a R/C helicopter club locally to me. I highly recommend you do this too if you want to get serious in this hobby. It’s illegal to fly helicopters or anything like that in someone Else’s field due to the risk in accidents but you should be fine with a Comanche. I’m going to plunge myself into the deep end and buy a Trex 500 6 channel helicopter! This helicopter is massive by the way, it’s about 1.2 meters long! And can fly 3000ft away from me any direction! It does cost about £260 for the helicopter but you do need to buy the control box and other things to finish the job. Overall it will probably set you back to about £600! This is also the helicopter you can see on Youtube with the Airwolf shell and the flashing lights! Check it out on youtube it’s so cool! Anyway good luck with the helicopter and have fun!

The PicooZ is a good idea, but the warranty is not too great. I would suggest you go with the Air Hogs Havoc instead… It is child-proofed, so it is hard to break and it wouldn’t hurt someone as much as a real helicopter would.

Micro rc helicopters?

So yeah, I’ve been browsing this website http://www.raidentech.com/mirche.html looking at micro rc helicopters.

I’m thinking of getting one just for fun, at some point soon. I’m kind of a big kid at heart, when relaxing at home. I see some of these that only cost like $20 something bucks. I looked at videos of them on youtube and they seem to be very easy to control and fly very well. I see that I’ll have to choose carefully, as apparently there are a few that only have a 30 second flight time on a 5 or 10 minute charge.

Some have a 15 or 20 minute charge, and a 5 to 8 minute flight time. This is more of what I would be interested in.

So, some questions for those who have one: How long do these rechargeable batteries in this thing last? How many charges before a new battery pack for the helicopter has to be purchased?

Also…I see various 2 channel through 7 channel helicopters. All are not micro, however…and I like the micros.
Pardon me for being dumb, but what does each ‘channel’ mean? Why is 7 better than two? I see 2 and 3 channel micros.

Does each command/button from the keypad representing one channel that is responsible for each function…and each channel runs on a separate frequency for each function (so they don’t get mixed up?). Sorry, but I don’t know much about this techy stuff.

Which one has the longest flight time of the micros?
If any micros are more sturdy (as far as crashes and such lol) than others…that would be helpful, too.

Admin answers:

Hi Anonymous,
I want to warn you that the $20 micro helicopters have a 50% failure rate out of the box. I have worked with many of them myself, and the members of my RC club got about 30 of them. Fully half would spin uncontrollably.

All the ones I had flew for several minutes on a 15 minute charge. There is no new battery for the heli. These do not have any user-serviceable parts. It is put in by the factory and you throw it away when it stops working. But the failures were always with the mechanics or with the electronics. The batteries kept going after a hundred charges (on the few that worked well enough to keep using)

Channels refer to the control features supported between the transmitter and receiver. Not individual frequencies for each channel, but rather coded data sent on the one frequency the Transmitter uses. Two channel helis have the main throttle on one channel, so that the heli can go up and down, and the rudder, or yaw control, on the second channel so that you ca turn the heli. There is no provision for forward flight. You typically add a bit of weight to the nose so that the heli always drifts forward slowly the entire time it is in flight. A three channel heli adds elevator, or pitch, control. You can make the heli lean forward and back, so you can control forward and rearward flight. A four channel heli adds roll control, so you can fly left and right (like a crab).
The next step is typically a six channel heli, adding gyro control and collective pitch. These are the helis that can do ore aggressive stunts, like inverted flight.

Before you buy, read and ask question on the dedicated RC heli forums. You will learn a lot, and get better information.

There are a lot of choices here, but your best bet would be a .30 sized or .50 sized Raptor. You can get them ARF (almost ready to fly) or in full kit form. Don’t get the ARF, build it yourself because you’re gonna need that experience when it crashes.. And it _will_ crash, they all do. I’ve been flying almost 5 years and have three working Raptors. I’ve toasted 2. You can get the model from a lot of places, but a good deal can be found at Heliproz. Also, get plenty of info from the links below.

MIA TUFF (trade mark.) introduced a LG upgrading Kit known as “4G3” and it is basically for Walkera 4G3 – 3D helicopter and also a kit for saving helicopter. Change the thin wire of landing gear of heli with the long lasting and durable one. This 4G3 kit is with G10 battery which provide support to plate and it is designed in such a way so the different sized batteries can forward positioned or can be rearward position so it easy to adjusting in the center of Gravity. There is another option that you can use cage of plastic battery but this cage is limited to Central Gravity adjustment because it make the tail of helicopter heavy.

The strut of G10 provides supports and the plate of battery frequently assembled by using glue, further assembly install to the bottom of stock of plastic frame by using stock of cage of battery mounting screws, skids and the struts are properly installed and then press-fit.

The 4G3 saver kits for 3D helicopter includes several things and these things are mentioned below in detail:

2 Struts of MIA TUFF (Trade Mark)

1 G10 Battery Support Plate of CNC Machined

2 G10 Strut Supports of CNC Machined

Until now, only a metal head made of aluminum has released. This consists of mixing arm, blade grips, rotor housing, swashplate and linkages. Unlike the plastic parts, the metal is very detailed in design and fills much of the slope which has made the cyclic more sensitive while adding only 1 gram of additional weight in the total weight of 4G3. This head piece cost around $50.

Another improvement might soon be released. It is a scale canopy bodies to give your 4G3 a more micro scale look. Also, rumors has it that a brushless improvement will be coming too.

With small in size, the Walker 4G3 helicopter is also very light and there is no need to perform many actions to control it and when you are flying it in idle up mode, it really gets more interesting. You can easily perform 3D actions like flips, loops, invert flying and rolls, if you are flying in a big area.

Despite the size of servos, they are very fast and have a very good functionality and if we can add some more torque, it will become even better.

The 4G3 is very good and in forward flight and it will fly straight as you command, although it loose some torque in difficult turns. There is a small slope in the head of 4G3 where the aluminum head part will be fixed.

As we know that 4G3 has a light weight, it has very little resistance to wind and it will not be a good idea to fly it outside when the wind speed is more 7mph. Therefore, don’t fly this outside on windy days and even in cloudy atmosphere. A good sunny day may prove to be a great opportunity to fly it outside.

An individual brushed motor runs the tail motor which is not enough to keep up with 4G3 all time. On some occasions, 4G3 will have a little lag when taking turns. You can also make some adjustments in gyro sensitivity, compensation and tail mix. The gyro of 4G3 is suitable for its size, but the gyro is not sufficiently sensitive and when the head speed reduces, the tail begins to drift some. Moreover, the full speed of 4G3 in flight experiences some changes in its RPM. Also, some parts of 4G3 are very fragile, so make sure to get some spare parts for the 4G3, just in case if any part is broken. The following parts are more important to get in spare:

Flybar

5 or minimum 3 sets of main blades.

Screw supplies

Linkage set

Additional batteries, if you want

Case for batteries

Additional tail blade(s)

If these things are affordable for you, then you should better buy them. Otherwise, if it’s out of your budget, then leave it for later.

Although, this helicopter is small, but this doesn’t mean that its flying capabilities are small too. The 4G3 is very good in flying and has an ability of giving a smooth flight experience. Although, controlling this helicopter is not easy at the beginning but once you are use to this, you will enjoy flying 4G3 easily. However, to constantly keep this helicopter flying, you have to keep controlling it; it won’t keep flying on its own.

The rotor wash in this helicopter produces some ground effect, so don’t fly this helicopter too high, keep it few feet above the ground. This is because, if you fly too high, it will become unstable in strong wind because it is very light in weight.

As I said earlier, a beginner will definitely going to have difficulties in flying 4G3 and he/she cannot fly it too high. Otherwise, if you are a expert or at least you have an experience in this, then flying 4G3 smoothly and high above the ground may be a piece of cake for you.

Flying Walker 4G3 is like playing the flight simulator video game. Flying this helicopter will be a good practice and a good experience.

Battery

This small helicopter needs the mini LiPo batteries with 400MAh single cell 3.7 volt power. This battery gives 4G3 the power for 8 minutes easy flying in normal made and 5 minutes 3D flying in idle up mode.

The only issues, regarding the battery, reported so far are that the battery holder is fragile and can be broken in hard landing and also the battery keeps falling out. The battery connectors are also very tight and it is difficult to separate them.

The Box Contents Of Walkera 4G3

Including a pre-assembled 4G3 helicopter itself in the box, there are also

A battery charger

A 6 channel 2.4GHz powered radio

An adapter wire for simulator of flight

A 400 MAh with 3.7 volt LiPo battery

An instruction manual of course

A screw driver made of plastic

An additional collection of main blades. That’s all.

The newly released Walkera 4G3 is credited as the micro type helicopter and till now it the tinniest existing 6 channel fully operational RC helicopter in the market. Despite its small size, it has all the functions of big helicopters. The Walkera 4G3 is so small that even flying it inside your house is not a problem. However, flying it inside your house or any small area will not bring out the full potential of 4G3. Since the 4G3 is small, it speed is very fast and it can go very far and higher, therefore, a big area will be good to enjoy the full experience and excitements of flying Walkera 4G3. Also, before you fly 4G3 outdoors and in big area, you should get used to flying it and become a skilled pilot of 4G3 in any safe area.
